Replacing a Toyota Key
There are several options to consider if you find that your Toyota key fob is damaged. If the internal electronics of your Toyota are in good condition it is possible to create a new key for an affordable price.
If the case is damaged, it is likely to need to be repaired. If the case remains intact, try opening it using the key that is hidden or using a thin pry tool at the noticeable notch. Unlock the case and gently lift the circuit board to reveal the battery.
Lost or Damaged Keys

Toyota has one of the most advanced car keys on the market. These include transponder chips which communicate with the vehicle to prevent unauthorized starting and make it impossible to start the engine if the incorrect key is used. They also let you lock and unlock your vehicle and start it remotely. This extra security comes with a price. Replacing damaged or lost Toyota key can cost hundreds of dollars.
You can determine if your Toyota key has transponder chips by looking at the blade of the key. The key is equipped with chips if it displays an encircling dot or dimple on one side or an "H" or a "G" marking. The key won't be marked or have a big bump at the top if it is not marked.
The cost of replacing a conventional metal key is usually less than $50. The cost of key fobs with a transponder chips is greater, since they must be programmed to work with the vehicle's system to disable it. The machines to do this are nearly all available at dealerships and cost anywhere from $150 to $250. Additionally the key has to be cut and laser-programmed.

Smart Keys
Smart key technology may allow you to start your Toyota without having to take your keys from your purse or pocket. Smart keys also allow you to store vehicle settings for different drivers and remotely unlock windows or the sunroof. They could also come with a feature that allows you to set limits on speed for your teenager when they are driving.
You must be within 10 feet of the vehicle to use the smart key. When you're close enough the vehicle will activate the courtesy lights, and open the driver or passenger door. You can then press the button on the key fob to unlock the trunk, too. Many modern smart keys come with a telescoping blade that can accommodate different hand sizes and provide greater flexibility in reaching the lock and ignition buttons.
Similar to traditional car keys, the smart key fob has an embedded transponder chip that transmits an encrypted signal when you hit the lock or unlock buttons. It's designed to deter thieves from hot-wiring or taking your vehicle by turning off the engine immobilizer. This technology isn't without its limitations. A skilled thief can use a scanning device to locate the code and transmit it to the key fob.
A smart key that is more recent, such as the Mercedes-Benz SmartKey, makes use of a unique technology known as rolling codes. A computer in the vehicle scans the unique code when you insert the key. This is to ensure that no one else can gain use of the vehicle since it is nearly impossible for a scanner to record and send the same rolling code repeatedly.
If your smart key isn't responding to unlock or lock buttons, it could be due to an inactive battery. The circuit board can be removed from most fobs to replace the battery. Take a photograph of the battery that was used and a note of the place where the new one is inside the case so that you can put it back together correctly when you're done. The majority of Toyota models are powered by a CR2032 battery which you can purchase in Freehold at any local store.
Key Fob Battery Replacement
It's not as complicated or time-consuming to change the battery in your keyfob as you might think. The process is relatively simple and you can locate replacement batteries at any hardware retailer or big-box stores. You can purchase them online. In addition to being cheap, a new battery will restore the functionality of your key fob.
The first step is to remove the key made of metal. There's usually a small metal button that is located just above the key portion of the fob. To remove the key, press the button. Then, remove the fob. This can be done by pressing the small hole on the fob that looks like a keyhole or by inserting the flat tool into the smallest hole. Once you've split the fob into two pieces, a front and back--sliding tools into the notch or opening can let you access the battery compartment.
Examine the battery. It's likely to be silver and formed in the shape of a circle. The battery will have a marking that indicates the type of replacement battery you require. After you get a new battery, you need to remove the old one from its container and replace it with the new. Be careful not to touch the flat surfaces of the battery which are sensitive to fingerprints, and can alter the life of the battery.
Reinstall the key fob case. If you're careful, you shouldn't have to force it back into position. If it doesn't snap into position, try gently applying pressure to the edges to remove it from the plastic frame. Reattach the key in the metal and turn it on to test the fob. Key Fob Case Replacement
Toyota key fobs are somewhat more difficult to lose than standard keys, but you could still be surprised if they disappear on your Belton or Killeen commute. The first thing to do is locate the Toyota keyfob to determine whether it is damaged. If your key fob is been damaged to the point of being useless, you will need to replace it with an authorized dealer to get the transponder and other electronic components programmed in your car. This is more involved than a simple key fob replacement. You'll need present a photo identification, proof of ownership, and the VIN of your vehicle.
If your key fob is slightly damaged, you may be able to purchase a new case to keep using the current electronics. It's dependent on the type of damage, such as water or more serious physical damage. If the key that is hidden isn't damaged, you can usually have a new one made at a Toyota service centre and use it.
Using a flat tool such as a screwdriver, carefully open the case of your key fob by putting it into a designated slot or notch. Once you have opened the case, raise the circuit board (if necessary) to reveal the battery inside. Be careful not to pull the case open because this could cause the electronic components to break.
